Dig Deeper

I am one of those crazy people who likes change. Every time I have moved to a new city it has been an exciting adventure. I like doing something different to my hair or trying a new hobby or restaurant. Although this can be a strength to my personality, it can also become a weakness if I am not careful.

The Lord is not opposed to change, but there are certain things that he has called to be stable in our lives. I cannot leave my marriage because I like change. I cannot take a break from my kids and move onto something new. I cannot pick up and move to a new city anytime I want, change churches when I get offended or switch religions when I don’t get the results I want. The Lord knows that although some change can be fun and exciting, there is change that can become damaging to our faith, our relationships and our destiny.

Colossians 2:6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. 8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

The scripture reminds us to let our roots grow deep with Christ and to let our lives be built upon Him. You can’t uproot a plant all the time and expect it to thrive, it needs to find good soil and stay in good soil! The deeper the roots dig, the stronger the plant will be. Then the scripture goes on to warn us not to be swayed by empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense (in other words, an idea that sounds really good but is from human origin and has nothing to do with God’s teachings). If we are planted in Christ and His word, this won’t be a temptation. However, if we keep uprooting ourselves (from church, other believers, His word, prayer, ect) it will be a lot easier to be swayed by “good ideas.”

If you are like me and find yourself looking for the next exciting change, remember to consult the Lord first and like the scripture says, let your lives be built upon him. Does the change your thinking of still involve you staying planted in Christ and His word? Or is it just a “good idea?” Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do, isn’t some major life change, but rather digging your roots down a little deeper in the places he has called you to stay planted.

Don't Settle,
